The Best Sandwich in LA?

Blurry pic, but a contender for LA’s best sandwich.

If not the very best, the Godmother sandwich at Bay Cities Italian Deli in Santa Monica is certainly an ace contender. Served on their phenomenally crusty and flavorful bread, the Godmother consists of slices of genoa salami, mortadella, coppacola, ham, prosciutto, and provolone.

You can order it otherwise, but I see no reason not to get it with “the works” — mayo, mustard, onions, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, Italian dressing, and pepper salad (either hot or mild, guess which I got).
The sandwich is a winner on all fronts. The meats are of great quality, the toppings fresh, the condiments are applied not too liberally, and the bread…have I mentioned the bread? Crusty, flavorful…oh, I did mention it. It’s house-made and truly amazing.

My good friends know that I’m a sucker for sandwiches in general, and for what I like to think of as a good, affordable “working man’s lunch”. The Godmother certainly qualifies. At $8 for a large with the works, this gut-stuffer is a bargain, which is no small motivator in this sluggish economy.

Located at 1517 Lincoln Blvd, Bay Cities is counter service only and gets easily packed with hungry sandwich seekers. Go early or at off times to avoid the crush. Also check out the grocery section – excellent Italian specialties, cheeses, wine, and gourmet gizmos.

I really love this place! One of my favorite specialty markets in LA.

  1. That does look awesome. Same day I saw I this I also saw other sandwich link, like this link for "world's best sandwich"–A triumph of Edwardian cuisine, the "Shooter's Sandwich" was originally created as a snack that that could be made the night before it was required, effectively making a beef Wellington portable so a gentleman needn't get peckish while hunting.
