Kasugai Gummies

I love a lot of Japanese snacks. The Japanese are unmatched in branding and product detail and subtlety of flavor when it comes to packaged foods, and these killer gummy candies from Kasugai are no exception. I love the array of flavors: muscat, peach, apple, strawberry, mango, red grape, orange, lychee, etc. I love that each round or heart-shaped candy comes individually wrapped in a plastic pouch that reminds you that the treat inside is “super juicy”.  And the candies themselves are delicious, soft, very representative of the fruit they are supposed to taste like, and well…super juicy. My favorites are muscat, apple, and peach, but honestly I like them all.

But the descriptions are hilarious.

As good as the gummies are, the copy on the packaging is very amusing, another victim in the long-standing struggle of English translators with the subtleties of Asian languages. Lots of entertainment value!

The muscat gummy: “Its translucent color so alluring and taste and aroma so gentle and mellow offer admiring feelings of a graceful lady. Enjoy soft and juicy Kasugai Muscat Gummy.” Wha?

The apple gummy: “Every drop of fresh apple juice, carefully pressed from the reddest apples, shining in colors of the cheeks of a snow-country child, is yours to enjoy in each soft and juicy Kasugai Gummy.” Huh?

The unintended hilarity of the package descriptions only enhances the joy of eating these excellent candies.

  1. Eating a delicious kiwi gummy right now, and I googled and found your blog while wondering if anybody has a number for the percentage of real fruit juice in these.

Good read and a tasty reminder of how much I need to try other flavors.
